Short answer
Consider your guest list size, budget, location and travel links, the style of ceremony you want, and whether the venue can hold both your ceremony and reception. Check its legal licence for weddings, accessibility, and any restrictions on decor, music or timings before you book.
Start with your guest list, as that sets the minimum and maximum capacity you need. A room that is too small feels cramped, but one that is too large can feel empty. Then look at your budget and what the venue actually includes, such as tables, chairs, linens, catering, staffing and cleaning. Ask for a full list of what is included and what costs extra, like corkage, overtime or a cake cutting fee.
Location matters for your guests, so think about travel time, parking, public transport and nearby accommodation. If many guests are coming from far away, a venue near a station or with on-site rooms is a big help. Also consider the legal side. In England and Wales, a civil ceremony can only take place at a register office, an approved venue or a registered religious building, and it cannot include religious content. In Scotland, you can marry almost anywhere with the registrar's or celebrant's agreement. In Northern Ireland, the venue must be approved by the registrar. If you want a religious ceremony, check with your place of worship about banns, licences or other requirements.
Look at the practical details too: is there a wet weather plan for outdoor ceremonies, are there noise restrictions, and can you have the music and decor you want? Visit the venue at the same time of day as your wedding to see the light and atmosphere. Finally, read the contract carefully, especially the cancellation policy and what happens if the venue closes or your date changes.
