How do you write a wedding order of service?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party

Short answer

Write the order of service by listing every part of the ceremony in the exact order it will happen. Use clear headings for each section, include the names of readers and the titles of readings, and add the words for any responses or hymns guests should join in with.

Start with the front cover. Write your names, the date, and the venue. You might add a simple line such as "Welcome to our wedding" or a short quote. Then move to the inside pages and list the ceremony order. Begin with the processional, noting the music that will play. Then the entrance of the couple, any welcome or introduction from the officiant, and the legal declarations if they are part of the ceremony.

For each reading or hymn, write the title and the name of the person reading or leading it. If guests are expected to join in with a hymn or a prayer, print the full words or at least the chorus. For responses, such as the vows or the rings, print the words that guests will say together. This is especially helpful for guests who are not familiar with the ceremony style.

Include the exchange of rings, the pronouncement of marriage, and the signing of the marriage schedule or register. In England and Wales, the register book is no longer used, but the signing of the schedule is still a key moment. In Scotland and Northern Ireland, the process is similar, so check with your registrar. End with the recessional and the music that will play as you leave.

Finish with a thank-you note to your guests and your families. Keep the language warm and simple. Avoid long paragraphs. Use bullet points or numbered lines for each part so guests can follow easily.
