How to write a thank you card for your wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

Start with a warm greeting, thank the person for coming and for any gift, mention something specific about them or the day, and sign off with both of your names. Keep it handwritten and personal.

Begin with a simple greeting such as "Dear" followed by their name. In the first line, thank them for attending your wedding. If they gave a gift, thank them for it here too, and mention the gift by name. Then add a personal touch. You could recall a moment you enjoyed with them, such as seeing them on the dance floor or catching up at the drinks reception. This shows you thought about them individually rather than sending a generic note.

If you received a gift, it is kind to say how you plan to use it or how much you love it. For example, "We are so grateful for the beautiful vase, it has pride of place on our mantelpiece." If they gave money, thank them for their generous gift and mention what you might put it towards, such as a honeymoon or a new sofa. Avoid mentioning amounts.

End with a warm closing such as "With love from" or "Lots of thanks," followed by both of your names. If you had separate cards printed with your names, you can still sign them by hand. Write the cards yourselves rather than asking someone else to do it, as the handwriting makes it personal. It is fine to use the same message for several guests, but change the personal detail each time.
