What does an order of service look like for a wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

A wedding order of service is a printed booklet or card that lists the ceremony in order, from the entrance to the exit. It usually includes the names of the couple, the date, the venue, the readings, the vows, the rings, the music and the names of those taking part.

A typical order of service is a single folded card or a small booklet, often matching your invitations and colour scheme. On the front cover you might have your names, the date and the venue. Inside, the pages list each part of the ceremony in the order it happens. This usually starts with the entrance music and the processional, then the welcome and introduction by the registrar or officiant. After that come readings, poems or songs, which may be led by friends or family. The vows and the exchange of rings follow, then the declaration and the signing of the marriage schedule or certificate. Finally, there is the recessional music and the couple walking back down the aisle. You can also include the words of your vows or readings so guests can follow along, and a note asking guests to turn off their phones. Some couples add a thank you to parents or a note about confetti. The order of service is not a legal document, so you can design it freely. You might choose a simple card with a single fold, or a multi-page booklet with photos. Your printer can help you choose a format that fits your ceremony length and your budget. The main aim is to help guests know what is happening and feel included.
