Who gets invited to the bridal party?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For brides

Short answer

The bridal party usually includes your closest friends and family who will support you on the day, such as your maid of honour and bridesmaids. You choose them based on closeness, not obligation.

Start with the people who have been most present in your life. Your maid or matron of honour is often your closest friend or sister. Bridesmaids can be siblings, close friends or even younger relatives who mean a lot to you.

Think about who will help you practically. This might include someone who carries your ring, holds your coat, or helps you get dressed. Some couples also invite a junior bridesmaid or flower girl if they have young family members they want to include.

Be clear about what you expect. Tell them if they need to attend fittings, a hen do or the rehearsal. Some people may not be able to commit, and that is okay. You can still ask them to stand with you without expecting the full role.

If you have no close friends, you can ask a sister, cousin or family friend. There is no rule that says you must have a large party. Keep it to people who genuinely want to be there and who you trust.
