Short answer
There are no strict legal rules, but good wedding hospitality means clear information, reasonable timing, food and drink, and consideration for travel and access. Treat your guests as you would wish to be treated in their homes.
The unwritten rules start with the invitation. Send it early enough for people to plan travel and time off work, and say clearly what is included. If guests need to book a room, tell them how and when. If you are blocking rooms, give a fair booking window and a clear deadline.
Timing matters. Keep the gap between the ceremony and the evening reception short, or provide something to do and somewhere to sit. Long waits with no refreshments are the most common complaint from guests. A welcome drink or light bite during this time goes a long way.
Food and drink should match the time of day and the needs of your guests. Offer vegetarian, vegan and allergy-friendly options, and label them clearly. Do not assume everyone drinks alcohol. Provide water and soft drinks throughout the day.
Accessibility is part of hospitality. Check whether there are steps, uneven paths or limited seating, and tell guests in advance so they can plan. If someone needs a quiet space, a place to rest or help with transport, make it easy to ask.
Finally, look after your guests at the end of the night. Give clear transport options, taxi numbers or a shared ride list, and make sure anyone who has travelled far has a safe way home. A small thank-you note or message the next day is a kind finish.
