What are the rules for guests at a wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Guests should follow the couple's wishes on dress code, timings, gifts and phones, and behave respectfully during the ceremony. If you are unsure about anything, ask the couple or the wedding party. The main rule is to be kind, punctual and supportive.

As a guest, your main job is to help the couple enjoy their day. Start by replying to the invitation by the date given, so the couple can confirm numbers with the venue. Follow the dress code on the invitation, whether that is formal, casual or themed. If no code is given, choose smart, modest clothing and avoid white or cream, which are usually reserved for the couple.

Arrive on time, or a little early, and switch your phone to silent or off during the ceremony. Do not take photos or videos unless the couple has said it is fine. Some couples have an unplugged ceremony, so respect that. During the ceremony, stand or sit as directed and keep conversation to a minimum.

For gifts, check the couple's gift list or website if they have one. If they ask for no gifts, do not bring one. If you bring a card, hand it to a member of the wedding party rather than leaving it on a table. At the reception, follow the seating plan, join in with the toasts and speeches, and thank the couple before you leave. If you have dietary needs, tell the couple well in advance. If you cannot attend, let them know as soon as possible, and send your congratulations anyway.
