What should women wear to a wedding in the evening?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

For an evening wedding, women should wear a smart dress, jumpsuit or co-ord in a darker or richer colour, with dressy shoes and a small bag. Avoid white and very casual outfits. Check the invitation for a dress code, and choose something you can dance in comfortably.

Think of the evening as a step up from daytime formality. A midi or floor-length dress in jewel tones, navy, black or deep green works well. A tailored jumpsuit or a smart trouser suit is just as appropriate. Fabrics like silk, satin, velvet or crepe feel more evening-appropriate than cotton or linen.

If the invitation says black tie, go for a long gown or a very dressy cocktail dress. If it says cocktail, a knee-length or midi dress is perfect. If there is no dress code, a smart dress with heels or dressy flats is safe. Avoid anything white or ivory, as that is usually reserved for the couple. Also avoid very casual items like jeans, trainers or plain t-shirts unless the couple has explicitly said the evening is relaxed.

Bring a wrap or shawl if the venue gets cool in the evening. Choose shoes you can stand and dance in, and consider a small clutch or cross-body bag so your hands are free. The key is to feel polished but comfortable, because you will likely be on your feet for several hours. If you are unsure, ask the couple or a member of the bridal party what the dress code is. It is always better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed.
