What should I check before signing a wedding contract?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Before signing, check the date, times, capacity, what is included, payment schedule, cancellation and refund terms, and any extra charges for things like corkage, staffing or overtime. Also confirm the venue's policy on suppliers, decor, and noise restrictions.

A wedding contract is a legal agreement, so read every line before you sign. Start with the basics: the correct date, the start and end times, and the number of guests the venue can hold. Check that the room you are shown is the one named in the contract, and confirm whether you have exclusive use or share the space.

Next, list everything that is included in the price. That might be tables, chairs, linens, tableware, a dance floor, or a PA system. Anything not listed is likely an extra, so ask for a full breakdown. Check the payment schedule: how much is due now, when the balance is due, and what happens if you pay late.

Look closely at the cancellation and refund policy, as well as what happens if the venue has to cancel on you. Confirm how many staff will be on site, whether there is a service charge, and what the corkage fee is if you bring your own drinks. Ask about overtime rates, cleaning fees, and whether you can use confetti, candles, or fireworks.

Finally, check the venue's rules on suppliers. Some venues require you to use their approved caterers or decorators, while others let you choose. Also ask about noise restrictions and any curfew, especially for outdoor areas. If anything is missing or unclear, ask the venue to put it in writing before you sign.
