Short answer
Look for the date, times, costs, payment schedule, cancellation terms, capacity, and what is included. Also check rules on decorations, noise, and suppliers. If anything is missing, ask before you sign.
A wedding venue contract should protect both you and the venue. Start with the basics: the exact date, the start and end times for your hire, and the number of guests the venue can safely hold. Make sure the price you agreed is written down, along with the deposit amount and when the final balance is due.
Check what is included in the price. Does it cover tables, chairs, linens, and a dance floor? What about heating, lighting, and parking? Are there extra charges for corkage, cake cutting, or overtime? Ask for a full list of inclusions and exclusions so there are no surprises later.
Look at the cancellation policy carefully. Know how much notice you must give and how much you lose at each stage. Also check what happens if the venue cancels on you, and whether they offer a refund or a new date.
Read the rules on decorations. Many venues restrict candles, confetti, or hanging items from walls. Check whether you can bring your own suppliers for catering, flowers, or music, or if you must use their approved list. Ask about noise restrictions and curfews, especially for outdoor areas.
Finally, check the small print on damage deposits, insurance requirements, and what happens in bad weather for outdoor ceremonies. If anything is unclear, ask the venue to amend the contract in writing before you sign. Never rely on verbal promises.
