Ceremony, legal and venues · Choosing a venue

What should be on a wedding venue comparison checklist?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Compare venues on capacity, legal ceremony options, indoor and outdoor spaces, catering rules, accessibility, parking, accommodation, noise restrictions, and cost. Also check what is included, such as tables, chairs, and lighting, plus any preferred supplier lists or time limits.

Start with the essentials: how many guests can the venue hold comfortably, and does that match your planned numbers? Check whether the venue is licensed for civil ceremonies, and if so, where the ceremony can take place. Since 2022, approved venues in England and Wales can hold civil ceremonies outdoors within their grounds, so ask about that if you want an outdoor exchange of vows. In Scotland, weddings can take place almost anywhere agreed with the registrar or celebrant, so the venue rules may be more flexible.

Look at the practical details too. Is there a room for getting ready, and is it available from the morning? What about parking for guests, and is there overnight accommodation for you or your family? Check accessibility for anyone with mobility needs, including steps, lifts, and accessible toilets. Ask about catering: can you bring your own caterer, or must you use the venue's kitchen? Are there any restrictions on decorations, candles, or confetti? Find out when the venue can be accessed for setup and when everything must be cleared by.

Make a simple list with columns for each venue you visit. Note the capacity, ceremony licence, outdoor space, catering options, accessibility, parking, accommodation, noise limits, and the total cost. Also note what is included in that cost, such as tables, chairs, linen, and staff. Ask about wet weather plans if you are considering an outdoor ceremony. Finally, check if the venue has a preferred supplier list, as this can limit your choices for photography or music.
