Short answer
Ask about availability, capacity, ceremony legality, indoor and outdoor spaces, catering, alcohol, accessibility, overnight rooms, noise restrictions, and what is included in the price. Also ask about wet weather plans, deposit and cancellation terms, and whether you can visit again before the day.
Before you book, you need to know exactly what you are paying for and what might cost extra. Start with the basics: is my date available, and what is the maximum and minimum number of guests? Then ask what is included in the package, such as tables, chairs, linens, crockery, and staff. Ask for a full list of extras, like corkage, cake cutting, or late-night extensions.
Ask about the legal ceremony. Can you hold a legal wedding here, or would you need a separate civil ceremony? If it is an approved venue in England and Wales, ask if they have an outdoor ceremony space and whether there are any restrictions on religious content. In Scotland, ask if they work with humanist celebrants. In Northern Ireland, check the same. If you are having a religious ceremony, ask if the building is registered for marriages and whether banns or a licence are needed.
Ask about the practicalities: is there a wet weather plan, and where would the ceremony move to if it rains? Is the venue accessible for guests with mobility needs? Are there overnight rooms, and how many can be reserved? What are the noise restrictions, and is there a curfew? Can you bring your own caterers, or must you use theirs? If you have dietary needs, ask how they handle those.
Finally, ask about money and contracts. What is the deposit, when is the balance due, and what is your cancellation policy? Can you visit again before the day, and is there a wedding coordinator on site? These questions will help you avoid surprises and choose a venue you can trust.
