Is 9 bridesmaids a lot?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For brides

Short answer

Nine bridesmaids is above average but not wrong. It is a lot to coordinate, but if you have nine close people you cannot imagine without, it can work. Just be ready for extra logistics, costs and photo time.

Nine bridesmaids is definitely on the larger side. Most wedding parties have between two and six, so nine will stand out. That is not a problem if it feels right for you, but it does bring practical challenges. You will need to organise dress fittings for nine people, which takes longer and may require more appointments. You will also need to think about hair and make-up schedules, transport to the venue, and thank-you gifts for everyone.

Your ceremony space matters. Nine people standing at the front can crowd a small altar or stage. Check with your venue or place of worship how many people can stand comfortably. You might decide to have some bridesmaids sit in the front row and only have four or five stand with you. That is a common and elegant solution.

Photos also take longer with a big group. You will need to plan extra time for group shots, and you may want to ask a friend or the photographer to help organise everyone. On the positive side, nine bridesmaids means a lot of support, laughter and help with the hen do. Just be clear about expectations, and consider whether you want a chief bridesmaid to help you manage the group.
