Short answer
A good amount of bridesmaids is whatever feels right for you, but most couples choose between two and six. There is no legal limit, so pick people who support you and keep the group manageable for your budget and stress levels.
There is no rule that says you must have a certain number of bridesmaids. Think about who you truly want standing with you, not who you feel obliged to ask. A smaller group of two to four often feels more intimate and is easier to coordinate for fittings, hen dos and photos. A larger group of five or six can be wonderful if you have a big circle of close friends or sisters, and you enjoy the buzz of a bigger team.
Consider practical things before you decide. Each bridesmaid usually pays for her own dress and travel, but you may want to cover hair, make-up or gifts, so your budget matters. Also think about the size of your venue and the space at the front during the ceremony. If you have a very long aisle or a wide stage, more bridesmaids can look balanced, but in a small room they might feel crowded.
Talk to your partner about who you both want to include. You might choose to have bridesmaids on both sides, or mix genders and roles. The most important thing is that everyone feels valued and knows what you expect of them. A clear chat about costs, dress choices and duties will prevent misunderstandings later.
