How many bridesmaids is enough?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For brides

Short answer

Enough is however many you can afford, fit in your venue, and manage without stress. For most couples, two to four feels right. But one is enough, and so is six, if that works for you. Quality matters more than quantity.

Enough bridesmaids is a personal answer, not a number. Start by thinking about your budget, because each bridesmaid usually means a dress, shoes, bouquet and a gift. If you are paying for their outfits, that adds up quickly. If they are paying for themselves, check they are comfortable with that before you ask.

Next, think about your venue and your day. How many people can fit in the room where you get ready? How many can stand with you at the ceremony without blocking the view? If you are having an outdoor wedding, remember that heels and long dresses can be tricky, so a smaller group might be easier.

Then think about your own energy. Every bridesmaid brings support, but also questions, opinions and needs. If you are someone who likes a calm, simple morning, two or three might be plenty. If you love being surrounded by your closest friends, five or six could feel wonderful.

There is no legal minimum or maximum. A registrar will not count your bridesmaids. A church will not refuse you for having too many or too few. So enough means: enough for you, enough for your budget, and enough for your sanity.
