Short answer
There is no fixed number. Most UK weddings have between two and six bridesmaids, but you can have one, none, or ten. It is entirely your choice, based on your family and friends.
There is no rule about how many bridesmaids you should have. In the UK, the most common number is between two and six, but plenty of couples have just one maid of honour, or no bridesmaids at all. Some have a mixed group of attendants, including men, which is completely fine.
Think about who you truly want standing with you. Your bridesmaids should be people you trust and feel comfortable with, not people you feel obliged to include. If you have a large friendship group, you might ask them all, but remember that each extra person means more organisation, more outfits, and more coordination on the day.
There is no legal requirement for bridesmaids in England, Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland. You only need two witnesses at the ceremony, and those witnesses do not have to be bridesmaids. So you can keep it small and simple, or go big if that feels right.
If you are unsure, start with your closest sister, best friend, or cousin. You can always add others later, though it is kinder to ask everyone at the same time. And remember, your bridesmaids are there to support you, not to stress you out. Choose people who will help, not hinder.
