How many invitations should you order for a wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Order one invitation per household or couple, not per guest. Count your guest list, group people who live together, then add a few spare for mistakes or late additions.

Start by writing your full guest list and grouping guests by household. A family of four usually needs one invitation, and a couple living together needs one too. Count the number of households, then add around five to ten spares for addressing mistakes, lost post or last-minute guests. If you are using e-invites, you do not need spares, but keep a digital copy for yourself. For printed invitations, order a few extra so you can keep one as a keepsake. If you are having separate invitations for the ceremony and the reception, order them separately. For save-the-dates, follow the same household rule. Remember that some guests may not reply, so you might send a gentle reminder rather than ordering more. If you are using a wedding website with RSVP, you can track responses easily and avoid printing too many.
