Short answer
Check the address and any wording on the envelope to see if a guest is invited, then reply exactly as requested. If you are unsure, ask the couple privately rather than assuming.
The invitation tells you the answer before you even open the envelope. If your name is written alone, you are invited on your own. If it says 'and guest' or includes a second name, a plus-one is welcome. Some couples write the guest's name specifically, which means only that person may attend.
Reply in the way the couple asks, whether by post, online or through a wedding website. Be clear about who is coming so the seating plan works. If the envelope does not mention a guest, do not add one. It is tempting to bring a partner, but the couple has budgeted and planned for a specific number.
If you are in a serious relationship and worried about being excluded, speak to the couple directly. They may have reasons you cannot see, such as venue capacity or family dynamics. Ask kindly and accept their answer. Never ask on social media or in front of other guests.
