Short answer
Answer clearly and kindly: say who is invited, for example "We're sorry, we can only accommodate named guests" or "You're welcome to bring a guest". Be direct to avoid confusion.
The best way to answer this is to be clear from the start. On your RSVP page, write a short line under the guest name field: "We have reserved seats for the guests named on your invitation only." That sets the expectation without singling anyone out. If you are allowing plus ones, say "You are welcome to bring a guest. Please add their name when you RSVP." For the FAQ section, add a question like "Can I bring a date?" and answer it plainly. For example: "Due to venue capacity, we can only host the guests listed on your invitation. We hope you understand." Or: "Yes, you may bring a guest. Please include their full name in your RSVP so we can plan seating." If you have limited space, you can also say "We appreciate your understanding as we keep the day intimate." Avoid vague phrases like "we'll see" or "maybe later". Guests appreciate honesty. If someone asks directly, you can politely repeat the same wording. Remember, it is your wedding and your budget, so you are allowed to set boundaries. Just do it kindly and consistently for every guest.
