Short answer
Ask clearly and kindly, with a simple yes or no option, and explain that you have limited space so you can only include named guests.
On your RSVP page, write something like: "We have space for the guests named on your invitation. If you have a partner or a regular plus one, please let us know when you RSVP, and we will do our best to accommodate them." Then give a clear option: "Do you need a plus one? Yes or No." If you can offer plus ones to everyone, say so plainly: "You are welcome to bring a guest. Please add their name when you RSVP." If you cannot, be honest but warm: "Due to venue capacity, we can only host the guests listed on your invitation. We hope you understand." Avoid vague wording like "and guest" on the website, because it causes confusion. Instead, ask for the guest's full name if you are offering one. Make the question optional, so single guests do not feel pressured. And always follow up personally if someone asks for a plus one you cannot give.
