Does the guest list include the bride and groom?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

No, the guest list is for everyone you invite, not the couple. The bride and groom are already there, so they are not counted as guests.

Think of your guest list as the people you are inviting to celebrate with you. You and your partner are the hosts, so you do not add yourselves to the count. This keeps the numbers clear when you talk to your venue about space and to your caterer about food.

If you are unsure, ask your venue how they count. Some count the couple when planning seating, while others only count invited guests. Either way, it is helpful to keep a separate note of your own names so nothing gets confused.

Your wedding party is a different matter. Bridesmaids, groomsmen, ushers and readers are part of the day, but they are not usually counted as guests. They often have their own seating and may be included in the venue's package. Check your contract to see how they are treated.

Children and babies also need thinking about. If you are inviting families, decide whether you want adults only or a family-friendly day. This choice affects how many places you need and how you set up the room.
