Do you list bride or groom first on a wedding website?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

There is no legal or official rule about whose name goes first. You can choose whichever order feels right for you. Most couples list the person whose surname is alphabetically first, or simply the name they prefer to lead with.

Your wedding website is your own space, so you are free to present your names in any order you like. Tradition often puts the bride first, but many couples now choose alphabetical order, or the order that matches the wording on their invitations. If you have a joint surname or are a same-sex couple, pick what feels natural. The key is consistency: use the same order on your website, save-the-dates, invitations and order of service, so guests are not confused. If you are having a religious ceremony, check with your place of worship whether they have a preferred way of announcing names, but that does not need to dictate your website. For civil ceremonies, the registrar will not mind. Your website is for your guests, so choose an order that makes both of you happy and feels welcoming to everyone.
