Short answer
A mother of the bride should not upstage the couple, choose her outfit before discussing it with them, or take over planning decisions. Her role is to support the couple, not to lead it.
Supporting the couple is the heart of the role. Avoid making big decisions without asking first. This includes choosing your outfit, picking a flower arrangement or booking a photographer. Talk to the bride and groom early about colours, styles and any family traditions you want to include. This prevents clashes and keeps the focus on them.
Do not make the day about your own family history or old grievances. Keep speeches and comments positive. If you have suggestions for seating or guests, share them gently and accept the couple's choice. It is also best not to arrive late or leave early without telling anyone. Your presence matters more than your position.
Avoid posting photos or comments on social media before the couple has shared theirs. Ask if you may take pictures and respect any request to keep certain moments private. If you feel overwhelmed, step back and let the wedding planner, coordinator or a trusted friend handle the details. Your calm presence will mean more than any perfect plan.
