What is not polite to do at the table?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

It is not polite to use your phone at the table, talk with your mouth full, criticise the food, start eating before others are served, or reach across other guests. It is also rude to leave the table without excusing yourself.

At a wedding meal, several things are considered impolite. Using your phone at the table is near the top of the list. Put it on silent and keep it out of sight, unless you need it for an emergency. Talking with your mouth full is also frowned upon, as is making loud noises while eating or drinking.

Criticising the food is not polite, even if you do not like a particular dish. The couple and their caterers have worked hard, and your comment could upset them. If you have a dietary need, you should have told the couple in advance. On the day, eat what you can and quietly leave the rest.

Starting to eat before others are served is considered rude, especially if the couple or the host has not begun. Reaching across the table for something is also poor form. Ask for it to be passed instead. Leaving the table without excusing yourself, particularly during a speech or a toast, is impolite. If you must leave, do so discreetly and quietly.

Finally, do not dominate the conversation or interrupt others. A wedding table is a chance to connect with people, not to perform. Keep your voice at a pleasant level and be mindful of the space and comfort of those around you.
