What is not etiquette?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Etiquette is not about enforcing strict rules, judging others, or making people feel small. It is not about spending more money or having a fancier wedding. Etiquette is about kindness, not control or perfection.

Many people think etiquette is a list of do's and don'ts, like which fork to use or how to address an envelope. Those details matter, but they are only tools. Etiquette is not about showing off your knowledge or catching someone out. If you correct a guest's table manners or criticise their outfit, you have missed the point entirely.

Etiquette is also not about spending beyond your means. You do not need a three-course dinner, a designer dress or a live band to be polite. A simple wedding with clear communication and genuine warmth is far more gracious than an expensive one that leaves you stressed and your guests uncomfortable. Likewise, etiquette is not about pleasing everyone at your own expense. You cannot make every relative happy, and you should not try. Setting kind but firm boundaries is part of good manners.

Finally, etiquette is not a one-size-fits-all rulebook. Different families, cultures and faiths have different traditions. What is polite in one household may be odd in another. The real test is whether your actions show respect for your guests and for yourself. If you are kind, honest and considerate, you are following etiquette, even if you skip the place cards.
