What is dress code etiquette?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Dress code etiquette means following the couple's stated dress code, dressing respectfully for the venue and season, and avoiding white or anything that outshines the couple. When unsure, ask the couple or check their wedding website.

The couple's invitation usually states the dress code, such as formal, smart casual or black tie. Treat that as the starting point. If it is not clear, consider the venue and time of day. A church or register office ceremony may call for more covered shoulders, while an outdoor summer wedding might suit lighter fabrics and flat shoes.

As a guest, your job is to support the couple, not compete with them. Avoid white, ivory or cream, and steer clear of outfits that look bridal. For grooms and other guests, a well-fitted suit in navy, grey or similar is safe. If the dress code says lounge suit, a tie is usually expected. If it says black tie, wear a dinner jacket or a long dress.

If you are unsure, ask a member of the bridal party or the couple directly. Many couples now include dress code guidance on their wedding website. It is always better to ask than to guess. Remember that comfort matters too. You will be standing, sitting, eating and dancing, so choose shoes and layers you can manage for several hours.
