What are the four types of dress code?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

The four common UK wedding dress codes are casual, smart casual, formal and black tie. Each tells you how dressed up to be, from relaxed to the most traditional.

Wedding invitations often use one of four dress codes to guide your outfit choice. Knowing which one you have helps you feel confident and comfortable on the day.

Casual is the most relaxed. You can wear smart jeans or chinos with a shirt or blouse, a summer dress or a linen suit. Keep it neat but comfortable, especially if the wedding is outdoors or in a garden.

Smart casual sits between casual and formal. Think tailored trousers or a midi dress with a nice top, or a shirt with a blazer. Avoid anything too worn or too revealing. A dress with a jacket works well here.

Formal means a full suit and tie for men and a long or knee-length dress for women. A suit with a tie is expected, and a floor-length gown is a safe choice for women. Avoid jeans and trainers.

Black tie is the most traditional and dressy option. Men should wear a black tuxedo with a bow tie, and women should wear a long evening gown or a very dressy cocktail dress. Hats and gloves are optional but fitting.

If the invitation is unclear, check with the couple or look for clues like the venue and time of day. When in doubt, it is better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed.
