Short answer
The five main dress codes you will see are casual, smart casual, cocktail, formal and black tie. Each tells you how dressed up to be, from relaxed to very smart.
Dress codes can feel confusing, but each one points you toward a clear level of smartness. Start by reading the words on your invite and thinking about the venue and time of day. A garden wedding in the afternoon will be different from a city hall ceremony in the evening.
Casual means you can wear comfortable clothes, but still look put together. Smart casual sits just above that, with chinos or a dress and a nice top. Cocktail is the most common code for evening events and usually means a knee-length or midi dress, or a suit without a tie. Formal asks for a longer dress or a full suit. Black tie is the most dressed up, with a floor-length gown or a long skirt for women and a tuxedo or dark suit with a bow tie for men.
If the invite says something unusual, such as 'creative black tie' or 'festival chic', it is fine to ask the couple for a quick clarification. You can also consider the weather and the ground. Heels can sink into grass, so wedges or block heels are sensible for outdoor events. Bring a jacket or wrap if you are unsure about the temperature.
