What are the different types of wedding dress styles?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For brides

Short answer

Dresses come in many cuts and fabrics, from A-line and ballgown to mermaid and slip styles. The best choice depends on your body, venue and how you want to feel on the day.

The main difference between styles is the shape of the skirt and the fit of the bodice. An A-line dress is fitted at the top and flows out gently, which suits many body shapes. A ballgown has a fitted bodice with a very full skirt that starts at the waist. A mermaid style is fitted through the hips and flares out lower down.

Slip and column dresses are straight and simple, often made from flowing fabric. Sheath dresses follow the body's natural line without much flare. Trumpet styles are similar to mermaid but flare higher up. Necklines also vary widely, from strapless and sweetheart to high neck, off the shoulder or halter.

Fabric plays a big role too. Satin gives structure, tulle adds volume, lace offers detail and chiffon drapes softly. Consider the season and venue when choosing. A heavy dress may be too warm for an outdoor summer wedding, while a light dress might not suit a formal winter evening. Think about whether you want pockets, a bustle or a second outfit for dancing. Try on several styles in your actual size before deciding.
