Can you use a photo of a QR code?

Short answer

Yes, you can use a photo of a QR code, as long as the image is clear, sharp and not distorted. A blurry or angled photo may not scan reliably.

A photo of a QR code can work perfectly, but the quality matters. If you take a photo of a printed QR code, make sure the lighting is even and the code is flat and facing the camera directly. Avoid shadows, reflections or any angle that makes the squares look stretched. Most phone cameras can handle this, but a screenshot of the original QR code file is usually safer than a photo of a physical copy.

If you are using a photo that includes a QR code as part of a larger image, check that the code is large enough in the frame. A tiny code in a busy background will be hard to scan. Crop the image so the code fills most of the space, and keep the contrast high. Dark squares on a light background work best. Avoid putting text or decorations over the code.

Before you print or share the photo, test it with a few different phones. Ask a friend to scan it from a normal distance. If it fails, go back to the original QR code file and use that instead. For invitations or signs, a clean digital file is always more reliable than a photo.
