How do I scan a QR code from my own screen?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

To scan a QR code from your own screen, open your phone camera and point it at the code on your screen. Hold steady until a notification appears, then tap it. You do not need a second device.

Scanning a QR code from your own screen is easy, but it can feel odd because you are using one device to read another. The simplest way is to open the camera app on your phone, then hold your phone so the QR code on your screen is in view. Make sure the whole code fits inside the camera frame. Wait a second or two, and a banner or notification should appear at the top of your screen. Tap that notification to open the link.

If you are using a laptop or computer, you can also scan a QR code shown on your monitor with your phone. Just point your phone camera at the screen. Make sure the screen is bright enough and not too reflective. If the code does not scan, try moving closer or further away, or adjust the screen brightness.

On some older phones, you may need to enable QR scanning in your camera settings. On others, you might need a QR scanner app, but most modern phones have it built in. If you are trying to scan a code from a screenshot on your phone, you can open the screenshot and then use your phone's built-in scanner from the camera roll, or simply take a photo of the screen with another device.

If the code does not work, check that the link is correct and that the code is not blurry or damaged. Try scanning it from a different angle or distance.
