Do all phones scan QR codes?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests · For parents

Short answer

Almost all modern phones scan QR codes, but very old or basic models may not. If a guest's phone cannot scan, you should always provide a plain website address as a backup.

Today, nearly every smartphone has a built-in camera or QR scanner. Most people can simply point their phone at the code and tap the link without downloading anything. This works on both major mobile platforms, so it is a reliable way to share your wedding website details.

There are a few exceptions to be aware of. Very old phones, some budget models, and certain basic feature phones do not have this capability. Some older Android devices need a separate app to read the code. If your guest list includes older relatives or friends who have not upgraded their phones, a plain web address is much safer.

To be kind and inclusive, design your invitation so the information is available in two ways. Put a short, easy-to-type website address next to the QR code. You can also include the address on a welcome board at the venue and in your order of service. This ensures everyone can find your RSVP page, accommodation details and travel information without frustration.

If you are unsure about your guests' devices, test the code yourself on a range of phones before printing. Ask a couple of friends with different models to try it. A quick check now saves confusion on the day.
