How do I create a wedding checklist in Excel?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party

Short answer

Open a new spreadsheet and create columns for task, category, due date, and status. Use rows for each task and add data validation for status, like 'Not started' or 'Done'. Sort by due date to see what is next.

Start by opening a new spreadsheet and setting up clear columns. Useful columns include Task, Category, Due Date, Assigned To, and Status. In the Status column, you can use a dropdown list with options like 'Not started', 'In progress', and 'Done'. To create a dropdown, select the cells, go to Data Validation, and choose a list. Enter your tasks row by row, grouping them by category such as legal, venue, suppliers, or attire. For legal tasks, remember the rules vary. In England and Wales, give notice at the local register office at least 28 days before the ceremony, and the notice is valid for 12 months. In Scotland, submit notice at least 29 days before, with registrars advising 10 to 12 weeks. In Northern Ireland, give notice at least 28 days before. Add a column for notes, where you can record contact details or booking references. Use conditional formatting to highlight overdue tasks, for example turning the due date red if it has passed and the status is not 'Done'. You can also add a filter so you can view tasks by category or person. Sort the sheet by due date to see what to tackle next. Keep the file backed up, perhaps on a cloud drive, so you can access it on your phone or computer. Update it regularly and tick off tasks as you complete them.
