How much time should you give guests to RSVP to a wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Give guests at least four to six weeks to RSVP, and set the deadline about three to four weeks before the wedding. This gives you time to chase late replies and confirm final numbers with your venue and caterers.

The exact timing depends on your wedding date and how you send invitations. A good rule is to send invitations about eight to ten weeks before the wedding, and ask for replies by a date that is three to four weeks before the big day. This gives guests plenty of time to plan, and you enough time to finalise numbers.

If you are having a destination wedding or guests need to book travel and accommodation, send invitations earlier, perhaps four months ahead, and give them a longer window to reply. For a local wedding with mostly nearby guests, eight weeks is usually fine.

Remember that some guests will be slow to reply. Build in a buffer of about a week after the deadline to chase anyone who has not responded. You can send a gentle reminder by email, text or phone. Your venue and caterers will usually need final numbers a week or two before the wedding, so set your RSVP date with that in mind.

If you are using a wedding website, you can set automatic reminders, but a personal nudge is often more effective.
