Short answer
There is no fixed amount. Give what you can comfortably afford, with the amount shaped by your closeness to the couple and whether you can attend.
Gift money is common at Indian weddings, but the right figure depends on your budget and relationship. Start by deciding what you can afford without stress, then adjust for how close you are to the couple and whether you will attend the events.
Consider what you are actually spending on the day. If you have paid for travel, accommodation, a new outfit and food, you can give less. If you are already attending at little extra cost, you may wish to give a little more. There is no rule that the gift must cover your meal.
Think about the events you are invited to. A large multi-day celebration can be costly for guests, and families often understand this. If you are only coming to one part, that is fine. If you are travelling from abroad, your presence is often valued more than the amount.
If you prefer a physical gift, a wish list or a contribution to a honeymoon fund can be easier for the couple to choose from. Ask the couple or their families if there is a preferred way to give. Some couples set up a gift list or a cash fund through their wedding website.
Whatever you give, a warm note with your gift means a lot. The couple will remember your kindness far longer than the amount.
