What time do bride and groom leave reception?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

There is no set time. You decide when to leave, usually after the final dance or when your energy runs out. Check your venue's closing time and plan your travel home.

The end of your reception is entirely your choice. Unlike the ceremony start, there is no legal or traditional rule for when you must leave. Many couples stay until the last dance, while others slip away earlier once everyone is settled.

Think about your venue's licence hours first. If your reception venue closes at a certain time, you will need to leave by then. Some venues require all guests to depart at closing, which means you leave with everyone else.

Consider how you are getting home. If you have hired transport or a taxi queue, plan to leave while drivers are still waiting. If you are driving, remember that alcohol and driving do not mix, so arrange a designated driver or a ride home in advance.

A few common exit options include:

  • Leaving after the final dance when the party naturally winds down
  • Sneaking away early for a quiet moment or a change of clothes
  • Departing with your wedding party for a late-night snack or after-party

Whatever you choose, tell your key people, such as your parents or best friends, so they know when to expect you or when to start clearing up.
