Short answer
Traditionally the bride stands on the left and the groom on the right, facing the officiant. This comes from old customs and is still the most common layout, but you can choose whatever feels right for you.
In most UK weddings the bride stands to the left of the person conducting the ceremony, with the groom on the right. This tradition dates back to when the groom needed his right hand free to draw a sword to defend his new wife. It is a nice story, but it is not a rule.
Today many couples mix this up. Some stand side by side facing the guests, some swap sides, and same-sex couples choose the arrangement that suits them best. Religious venues may have their own custom, so check with your place of worship. Register offices and approved venues usually let you decide.
What matters most is that you both feel comfortable and can see each other clearly. If you are worried about which side to pick, ask your photographer or celebrant for a quick sketch before the big day. Your guests will follow your lead anyway.
