What is the order of a wedding ceremony for the bride's parents?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

The order varies by ceremony type, but parents are usually seated just before the wedding party enters, and may walk the bride down the aisle. Check your ceremony plan with the registrar or celebrant to confirm.

There is no single fixed order that applies to every wedding, because the sequence depends on whether you have a civil ceremony, a religious service, a humanist ceremony or a combined celebration. In a traditional civil or religious ceremony, the parents are typically seated shortly before the wedding party begins to enter. The bride's parents are often the last to be seated, which signals that the ceremony is about to start.

In some ceremonies, one or both parents walk the bride part or all the way down the aisle. In others, the parents simply take their seats and the bride enters alone or with her wedding party. After the ceremony, parents may be asked to stand and leave first, or to remain seated while the newly married couple exits.

Your registrar, celebrant or place of worship will share a ceremony plan, and you can ask them where your parents fit. If you have step-parents, divorced parents or chosen family, you can arrange seating and walking roles that feel right for your family shape.

  • Confirm the seating order with the person running the ceremony.
  • Agree in advance who walks the bride, if anyone.
  • Tell parents when to stand or leave so they are not unsure.
