What is the wedding processional order with parents and grandparents?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

A common order is grandparents first, then parents, followed by the bridal party and finally the bride. There is no set legal order, so you can arrange it however suits your family.

There is no legal requirement for the order in which family members walk down the aisle. It is a tradition that varies by family, faith and personal preference. A widely used order begins with the grandparents, who are often escorted by a groomsman or a family member. Next come the parents. The mother of the bride is usually the last parent to be seated, often escorted by a groomsman or a close relative.

In many ceremonies the groom and his parents are already seated before the processional begins. The bridal party then walks down, usually one by one or in pairs, ending with the chief bridesmaid. Finally, the bride makes her entrance, often escorted by her father or another important person. Some couples choose to walk together, or to have both sets of parents walk with them.

If your family shape is different, that is perfectly fine. You might have stepparents, single parents, or guardians walking instead. Talk to your family about who should be honoured and in what order. A printed order of service or a simple cue card for the usher can help everyone follow the plan without confusion.
