What is the traditional wedding processional order in the UK?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party · For guests

Short answer

The traditional UK wedding processional usually begins with the officiant and wedding party, followed by the bride, and ends with the groom entering just before the bride. Modern couples often adapt this order to suit their families and venue.

A classic processional in England and Wales starts with the officiant and any ushers taking their places. The wedding party then walks down the aisle in pairs or singly, often with bridesmaids and groomsmen. The flower child or ring bearer may come next, followed by the bride's parents if she is being escorted. The bride enters last, usually with her father or another important person.

Grooms often enter from the side before the ceremony begins rather than walking down the aisle. This is common in religious buildings and register offices. Some couples choose to walk down the aisle together, or have both parents escort them. Same-sex couples and non-binary couples frequently reorder the processional to reflect their own families and relationships.

If you are having a humanist ceremony, the order is entirely your choice. Since humanist ceremonies are not legally binding on their own in England and Wales, couples usually add a civil ceremony. Check GOV.UK for the current position. For religious weddings, ask your place of worship whether they have a preferred order. Whatever you choose, share the plan with your wedding party and ushers so everyone knows where to be.
