What is the wedding processional order for a same-sex couple?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party · For parents

Short answer

There is no fixed order for a same-sex couple. You walk in however feels right for you, together or separately, with whoever you choose.

Your ceremony is yours to shape, so there is no rule about who leads. Some couples walk in together down the aisle, hand in hand, and arrive side by side at the front. Others walk in separately, each accompanied by the people who mean the most to them. You might have both parents, one parent, a sibling, a friend, or no one at all. If you have a bridal party, they can walk before you, with you, or not at all.

The order you choose should reflect your relationship and your comfort, not tradition. If you want both sets of parents to be involved, you can have them seated just before you walk, or have them walk with you. There is no right or wrong way. Speak with your registrar or celebrant about the flow so everyone knows where to be and when. If you are unsure, ask your wedding planner or a trusted friend to help you plan the timing.

Remember that the legal part of the day is the same for everyone. You still need two witnesses and the correct paperwork. The processional is the part where you get to be creative and personal.
