Who pays for a same-sex couple's wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

There is no traditional rule for who pays for a same-sex couple's wedding. You and your partner decide together, based on your own budget and what feels fair. Many couples split costs equally, while others accept help from family if offered.

Same-sex weddings do not come with a default payment script, which can actually be freeing. You get to design your own approach. Some couples split everything down the middle, others divide by income, and some ask each side of the family to contribute what they can. All of these are fine.

Start by having a calm conversation with your partner about what you each earn, what you can save, and what kind of day you want. If parents or relatives offer to help, you can accept or decline, but never assume they will pay. It is also worth remembering that some families may be less familiar with same-sex weddings, so clear, kind communication about your plans can help everyone feel included.

You might choose to host a smaller ceremony and put more towards a party, or the reverse. There is no right answer. What matters is that you both feel comfortable with the financial decisions. If you want a legal ceremony in England or Wales, remember that a humanist ceremony alone is not legally binding there, so check GOV.UK or your register office for the current rules. In Scotland and Northern Ireland, humanist weddings can be legal.
