Who pays for the wedding cake?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Traditionally the bride's family paid for the cake, but today most couples pay for it themselves. Whoever offers, or whoever is hosting, can pay. There is no rule, so decide together based on your budget.

In the past, the bride's family covered the cake as part of the wedding breakfast. These days, that tradition has largely faded. Most couples now pay for their own cake, especially if they are funding the wedding themselves. If parents or other relatives offer to contribute, that is a lovely way to share the cost, but it should never be assumed.

When you are planning, talk openly about who is paying for what. Some families split costs by category, for example one side pays for the cake and the other for the flowers. Others simply pool money into a general fund. The key is to agree early so no one feels put upon.

If your budget is tight, you can ask a talented friend or family member to bake the cake as a gift. Or you can have a small display cake and serve a sheet cake from a supermarket. The cake is a centrepiece, but guests care more about the celebration than the tier count. Always check with your venue whether they charge a cake cutting fee, and ask if they provide a cake stand and knife.
