Short answer
The couple usually pays for invitations and stationery, as it is part of the wedding's core costs. If someone offers to gift the printing or design, that is welcome, but there is no traditional rule anymore.
Invitations, save the dates, order of service booklets, menu cards, thank-you cards and any signage all fall under stationery. Traditionally, the bride's family paid for invitations, but that custom is now rare. Most couples budget for stationery themselves, as it is a direct part of their wedding planning.
If you want to keep costs down, consider digital invitations for some events, such as the hen do or the evening reception. For the main wedding, you can print at home, use a simple design, or ask a creative friend to help. You do not need to match every piece of paper. Many couples skip menu cards and use a single welcome board instead.
If a parent or grandparent offers to pay for stationery, accept graciously and let them choose the style or wording if they wish. That can be a lovely way to involve them. Always order a few extra invitations for keepsakes and for guests you might have missed. Check your guest list twice before ordering, and remember that RSVP cards should include a clear deadline.
