Short answer
Wedding cakes cost more because they are larger, use finer ingredients, require more skilled labour and often include custom design, delivery and setup. You are paying for time and expertise, not just cake.
A standard celebration cake from a supermarket is made in bulk with simple ingredients. A wedding cake is usually made to order, often over several days. The baker bakes fresh tiers, makes fillings and frostings from scratch, and then assembles and decorates the cake on site. That takes time, skill and experience. Wedding cakes are also typically larger, with multiple tiers, which means more ingredients and more structural work. Tiered cakes need internal supports, boards and sometimes pillars to hold them safely. Custom designs, such as sugar flowers, hand-painted details or intricate piping, add hours of labour. Many bakers offer tastings and consultations, which are included in the price. Delivery and setup are also part of the cost, especially if the venue is far away or the cake needs assembling on arrival. Some bakers charge more simply because wedding cakes carry higher expectations for perfection and reliability. The cake must survive transport, stand for hours and be cut neatly in front of guests. That pressure is reflected in the price. You can reduce costs by choosing a simpler design, a smaller display cake with extra sheet cakes behind the scenes, or seasonal flavours. Always ask your baker for a full quote and what it includes, so you understand exactly what you are paying for.
