How many hours does it take to plan a wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party

Short answer

There is no fixed number of hours. Planning a wedding takes as long as you give it, and it varies hugely by venue, guest count and how organised you are. Expect many small tasks spread over months, not one big block of time.

You cannot put a single number on wedding planning because no two weddings are alike. A small civil ceremony with a few guests might take a few weekends of work. A large wedding with many suppliers can involve dozens of phone calls, emails and visits. The real work is not hours, it is decisions. Every choice, from the date to the menu, takes time to research and confirm.

A practical way to manage it is to break the work into weekly tasks. Set aside one or two hours a week for admin, such as chasing suppliers or updating your guest list. Use a simple checklist with categories: legal, venue, catering, outfits, music, flowers, stationery, and seating. Tick things off as you go. You do not need to do everything yourself. Ask your partner, family or bridal party to take on specific jobs, like collecting quotes or arranging transport.

Be realistic about your other commitments. If you both work full time, plan for shorter sessions more often. If you enjoy the process, you might spend more time on details. The key is to avoid last-minute panic by setting deadlines that are earlier than the actual need. For example, send invitations at least six weeks before, and confirm final numbers with your venue a week before the wedding.
