How to plan decorations for a wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Start by setting a budget and a style, then list every area that needs decoration, from the ceremony to the tables. Prioritise what matters most to you, and work from the biggest items down to the smallest details.

Begin with two things: your overall budget and the mood you want. Look at photos of weddings you like and note the colours, materials and shapes that appeal to you. Then write down every space that will be seen by guests. That usually includes the ceremony area, the entrance, the drinks reception, the dining room and the toilets. For each space, decide what is essential and what is a nice extra.

Next, make a list of items you need, such as tablecloths, runners, centrepieces, place settings, signs and lighting. Put them in order of importance. Most couples find that the dining tables matter most, because guests spend the most time there. Allocate your budget accordingly. You can save by reusing ceremony flowers on the top table, or by moving decorations from the ceremony to the reception.

Think about practicalities too. Who will set up the decorations and when? Will the venue allow candles or hanging items? Do you need to collect everything at the end of the night? Write a timeline for the day before and the day of the wedding. A simple plan on paper will stop you from forgetting anything.

Finally, keep a master list and tick items off as you buy or make them. Leave room for flexibility. If something is too expensive or too complicated, change it. The goal is a warm, personal look that you can manage without stress.
