What is the golden hour at a wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

The golden hour is the hour just before sunset, when the light is soft, warm, and flattering. Photographers love it for couple portraits because it makes skin glow and backgrounds look dreamy.

Golden hour happens twice a day, but at a wedding you usually use the evening one, about 60 to 90 minutes before sunset. The sun is low, so shadows are long and gentle, and the light has a warm, honey tone. This is why many couples schedule their main portrait session during the drinks reception or just after the meal, depending on the season.

In summer, sunset can be after 9pm, so you might have your couple photos later in the evening, after speeches. In winter, sunset can be as early as 4pm, so you may need to do portraits before the ceremony or immediately after. Ask your photographer or venue for the exact sunset time on your date.

If the weather is cloudy, do not worry. Overcast light is soft and even, and your photographer will still get lovely shots. Golden hour is a bonus, not a requirement. The best photos come from you feeling relaxed, so trust your photographer to find good light wherever you are.
