What do I need for a basic wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

You need valid legal notice, a registered venue or officiant, two witnesses, and a signed marriage document. Beyond that, a basic wedding needs guests, an outfit, and a way to celebrate together, but nothing else is legally required.

The legal essentials come first. Give notice in person at the correct register office, at least 28 days before the ceremony in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, or 29 days in Scotland. Choose a venue that is legally allowed to host your ceremony: a register office, an approved venue, or a registered religious building in England and Wales. In Scotland, weddings can happen almost anywhere agreed with the registrar or celebrant. In Northern Ireland, notice goes to the registrar for the wedding district.

You need two witnesses who can sign the marriage schedule or document on the day. In Scotland, witnesses must be aged 16 or over. If you are having a religious ceremony that is not legally binding on its own, such as a humanist ceremony in England and Wales, plan a short civil ceremony as well so your marriage is recognised. Humanist ceremonies are legally binding in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

For the rest of a basic wedding, think about what matters to you: a small guest list, simple outfits, a meal or drinks, and a way to mark the moment. You do not need to change your name, and there is no legal requirement for rings, flowers or a photographer. Keep the day manageable and focus on the ceremony and the people you love.
