Short answer
Order one per household, not per guest. Count the number of invitations you will send, then add about ten percent extra for mistakes, lost cards and last-minute additions.
Start by making a guest list and grouping people into households: couples who live together, families with children, and single friends each count as one household. That is your base number. Then add a few spares, usually around ten percent, to cover printing errors, addresses that bounce back, or people you forgot. If you are posting internationally, add a couple more for lost mail. If you are making your own, you can print a few extra sheets of card at little cost. If you are ordering from a print shop, ask if they offer a small overrun, as many do. Do not order one per person unless you are sending individual cards to each adult, which is rarely necessary. For a typical wedding of 100 guests, you might need around 60 to 70 cards, but that depends on how many households are on your list. Always round up, not down.
